MOVEBR Groundbreaking Kicked Off a Major Milestone in the Revitalization of North Baton Rouge

We just kicked off a transformative effort I call our “Restoring Plank Road” initiative which will breathe new life into one of our city’s most historic and vital corridors.
With the groundbreaking for the MOVEBR Plank Road Corridor Enhancement/Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, work begins to repave the entire 5.3-mile stretch from I-110 to Airline Highway in North Baton Rouge. This project will also include new sidewalks and curbs, ADA-compliant intersections, enhanced lighting and new signals to ensure safety and accessibility for pedestrians and drivers alike. The MOVEBR program participated in several community events in recent months, including the Park Forest Resource Fair, District 5 community meeting, the Connecting East Baton Rouge Neighborhood Convention 2024, and a District 1 community meeting. These events provided unique opportunities to provide valuable information to various stakeholders and communities in non-traditional settings. You can read more about these events here.

| Project Spotlight: Midway |

If you travel in and around the Baton Rouge Health District, you will notice significant progress on one of three MOVEBR projects in this area. Each of these projects will increase vehicular capacity and provide for pedestrian and bicycle connectivity in an effort to adhere to the City-Parish complete street policy and goals. The Midway (Picardy - Constantin) project is constructing a new two-lane roadway between Picardy Avenue and the soon-to-be-constructed continuation of Constantin Boulevard (formerly Dijon Ave), which is directly behind the Baton Rouge General and Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. The MOVEBR program is hosting a Roadshow during the month of October in four locations across the parish to update the community about ongoing and upcoming projects. The series kicked off on Monday, October 7 with its first stop at the North Baton Rouge Rising Resource Fair at the McKay Automotive Technology Center on the BRCC Ardendale campus. | New Traffic Signal System is Helping to Keep Traffic Moving |

Six months after the completion of the MOVEBR traffic signal projects, Mayor-President Sharon West Broome and administration officials demonstrated how real-time adjustments have kept traffic moving during emergency events and planned interstate closures due to construction. They also showed videos of daily commute times made more consistent by the new connected signal system. You can read more about the traffic signal system here.

| Elm Grove Garden Sidewalks Project Improves Safety Near School |

|
The Elm Grove Garden Drive sidewalks project is complete, making pedestrian access safer on this street from Blount Road to Rosenwald Road. New sidewalks that are ADA compliant and a pedestrian-activated rapid-flashing crosswalk beacon provide safer access to Ryan Elementary School and the Progress Road Head Start campus.
