Signal Improvements Will Help Manage Traffic During Interstate Construction

Advanced Traffic Management Center (ATMC)

A significant amount of work on the modernization of Baton Rouge’s 470 traffic signals has been completed, which will help keep traffic flowing on surface streets as the state ramps up construction on the I-10 widening project. MOVEBR projects to install detection devices, traffic monitoring cameras, traffic signal controllers, emergency power supplies and emergency vehicle preemption systems are now 100% complete.

In addition, 176 new miles of fiber optic cable is being installed at a rate of more than 1,000 feet per day. For years, the city-parish has been installing fiber optic cable to connect traffic signals, and the MOVEBR program is finishing the job. The cable will provide communications for all signals to a central traffic management center and improve overall corridor operations.

By the end of the year, the MOVEBR program also plans to complete hardware and software upgrades to the Advanced Traffic Management Center (ATMC), signal upgrades and signal retiming for newly connected corridors.
