New Traffic Signal System is Helping to Keep Traffic Moving

Six months after the completion of the MOVEBR traffic signal projects, Mayor-President Sharon West Broome and administration officials demonstrated how real-time adjustments have kept traffic moving during emergency events and planned interstate closures due to construction. They also showed videos of daily commute times made more consistent by the new connected signal system.
One accident closed the Mississippi River Bridge for hours while traffic was diverted from both I-10 and I-12 onto Airline Highway. From the Advanced Traffic Management Center (ATMC), adjustments were made to the Airline Highway signals within minutes to move traffic to the Old Mississippi River Bridge as smoothly as possible.
Other scheduled closures due to state construction on I-10 have also been coordinated with DOTD to keep traffic moving on local surface streets. Mayor Broome pointed to video from daily commutes showing drivers moving along Harding Boulevard, Florida Boulevard and Siegen Lane during morning commute times with most signals green and traffic moving along near speed limits.
“Thanks to the voters of East Baton Rouge Parish approving the MOVEBR program, we have delivered a signal system that has made Baton Rouge one of the most connected cities in the U.S.,” Mayor Broome said. “We now have a team of traffic engineers working around the clock with the technology needed to keep Baton Rouge moving.”
