Featured Project: Groundbreaking Held for Groom Road Corridor Improvement
Baker Mayor Darnell Waites and District 2 Metro Council Member Anthony Kenney joined City-Parish officials to kick off construction on Phase 1 of the MOVEBR Groom Road Corridor Improvements project. Groom Road is a major roadway in Baker, providing access to schools, churches and businesses, and connecting Plank Road and Highway 19.
Planned improvements include:
- New asphalt roadway surfacing and concrete pads installed for boarding and offloading at bus stop locations.
- Dedicated turn lanes
- 8-foot wide shared-use sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.
- Pedestrian crosswalks at all side streets and the school
- New school flashers
- 34 ADA accessible ramps
- Low level landscaping improvements
The contractor is KCR Contractors and the project amount is $5.6 million. Construction began in November and is expected to last about 17 months. The future Phase 2 is currently under design which will complete the corridor improvement between Highway 19 and McHugh Road.
