Groundbreaking Marks Start of MOVEBR Perkins Road Overpass Project
The MOVEBR Program Management team and area residents and businesses broke ground on the Perkins Road Overpass Project today, which will create a safer, brighter connection between nearby neighborhoods and Perkins Road businesses.
The project will build a multi-use trail and provide new signage, a gated railroad crossing, lighting, bike racks, litter receptacles, landscaping, drainage upgrades and 41 designated parking spaces.
Together, these upgrades will make the area cleaner, safer, more accessible, and more inviting for residents, visitors, local businesses, and daily travelers.
The project will advance MOVEBR and Complete Streets goals for one of Baton Rouge’s most recognizable corridors and connect businesses on the commercial side of the Overpass with neighborhoods on the residential side, including Hundred Oaks, Poets Corner, Zeeland Place and the Garden District with a multi-use path for walking or biking.
The project is part of MOVEBR’s voter-approved Future Community Enhancement Projects, with the first phase identified through a Call for Projects process and approved by the Metro Council in 2023.
This project resulted from a grassroots coalition that funded early studies and it became part of the MOVEBR Program through the support of the Metro Council and Mayor’s Office.
The project was designed by Carbo Landscape Architecture and will be constructed by The Luster Group. The project cost is $2.9 million and it is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
All businesses will remain open during construction and the contractor will provide safe access for customers.
