MOVEBR Breaks Ground on Scenic Highway Improvements Near Southern University

Mayor-President Sid Edwards joined state, local and Southern University officials on May 20 to break ground on the MOVEBR Scenic Highway (Harding Blvd. to Swan Ave.) Corridor Improvements Project, a major investment in the gateway to Southern University.

A major part of the project is resurfacing Scenic Highway between Harding Blvd. and Swan Ave., along with sidewalk, roadway, and signal upgrades, a new pedestrian crossing near Fairchild, turn-lane improvements, and related railroad crossing safety work.

This work is the first of three projects planned for the area and is designed to strengthen safety and connectivity for Southern University students and the North Baton Rouge community. Future improvements also planned for the area include beautification, lighting, signage, and other amenities at Scotlandville Plaza. In addition, under a separate construction contract, DOTD, a partner on the project, will make railroad safety railroad safety improvements which include a replacement of the existing grade crossing with new gates and flashers for vehicles but will accommodate non-vehicular users as well.

Mayor Edwards said these projects will help strengthen safety and access for Southern University students and the North Baton Rouge community. Hard Rock Construction is the contractor for the project, and GOTECH provided design services. Learn more about the project and follow updates here.
