Project Spotlight: McHugh Road

Barriere Construction Co., contractor performing roadway construction for Phase A of the McHugh Rd project, is set to remobilize to complete roadway improvements within the northern section of McHugh Rd between Lower Zachary Rd. & the North side of the Comite Diversion bridge. The project is being coordinated with federal, state, and private stakeholders and is being completed in phases to better coordinate and align with other construction projects in the area.
McHugh Road was the first of four MOVEBR projects to start construction in the City of Zachary. McHugh is currently a two-lane rural roadway. The improvements will provide an enhanced two-lane roadway from Wimbish Road to Lower Zachary Road, with shoulders, open ditches, and removal of the existing road curvature. The project overlaps portions of the Comite River Diversion project and Florida Gas Pipeline and is being closely coordinated with the Army Corps of Engineers, the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development, and the Florida Gas Transmission Company.
McHugh road is being completed in three phases:
- North Phase A: Lower Zachary Road to the North side of the Comite Diversion bridge – The contractor has completed approximately 10% of the construction, before a planned halt of operations to allow Florida Gas relocation to occur for the Comite River Diversion project. The contractor will remobilize in February 2026 to complete Phase A.
- North Phase B: Remainder of the North side from Phase A to Comite Diversion bridge – This phase will commence once the diversion bridge is complete which is being constructed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
- South Phase C: Wimbish to the Comite Diversion bridge – Construction for the remaining phase will begin upon the completion of the Comite Diversion project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
