Open House held at Glen Oaks High School regarding Mickens Road Widening Project

The MOVEBR Program Management team hosted a public Open House on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Glen Oaks High School from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The event served to return to the community with concepts developed during the design study phase of the project for comment and discussion. The event was well attended with approximately 90 attendees, including Councilmember Darryl Hurst serving East Baton Rouge Parish (EBRP), Metropolitan District 5.

You can view a recap of the meeting here.
Currently, Mickens Road is a two-lane roadway lacking shoulders and pedestrian infrastructure. The project area includes a mix of existing and future residential developments, with a concentration of homes and businesses between Hooper Road and Lanier Drive. The corridor serves as an alternate route to Scenic Highway or I-10 for commuters traveling to and from communities located in the eastern boundary of the Parish, such as Sherwood, O’Neal Lane, or even the city of Central. The corridor is also often used by local pedestrians and cyclists frequenting area businesses or neighboring communities. Variations in roadway usage are also common, partly due to area schools within a mile of the roadway, with defined peaks in the mornings and late afternoon coinciding with school start and dismissal.
The design study considers improvements and enhancements throughout the corridor including paved shoulders, roadway lighting and speed reduction options. The concept includes the following:
Hooper Rd. To Lanier Dr.
- A three-lane roadway including a continuous center, left-turn lane.
- A shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on both sides of roadway
- Roundabout or signalized intersection at Silverleaf Ave.
- Roundabout or signalized intersection at Sumrall Dr.
- Roundabout or signalized intersection at Lanier Dr.
- A subsurface drainage system to improve stormwater management.
Lanier Dr. To Joor Rd.
- A two-lane roadway
- Eight-foot, paved shoulders
- Open drainage (ditches)
